Victoria B.C May 11th. 1874

My dear Nannie

We arrived here on Saturday the 9th, just had a short passage from S. Francisco (under four days) all well except a slight cold- and awfully busy. – had strawberries asparagus &.c at S.F. and here everything is green and the fruit trees in blossom but it is not warm-

Mr. Grahame leaves this evening- he has given away or sold his furniture privately.

I never felt so lonely away from home before I suppose the loss of our little darling last year makes me anxious I missed him more every time I came to Brockville, and when I left than I did when I first came home at Xmas- I cannot help thinking every day of the danger of children falling from the rocks into the river- and however careful you may be your eye cannot always be on them- I think they should be absolutely forbidden to go on the rock beyond the cove except when Miss Foster or yourself is with them, And Ian too when he comes home will be too venturesome in swimming far into deep water- Every letter or telegram I get I shall fear that something has happened to some of them. Now take good care of yourself and them and my work wont hurt me- I almost wish we had a house away from the river. – I shall not leave for the mainland before a fortnight or three weeks. The mail is just closing so- God bless you,

Yours ever

M. Smith
