                                 December 4th 1883

My dear Nannie

I expected to leave for home on the 12th but I understand the General manager of the C.P.R. syndicate (Van Horne) is coming out this month to inspect the railway works and I will have to remain till he comes so it is not likely I shall be home till after the new year – we have had a great freshet here which has done considerable damage to the works and I have to go over the line again this alone will take me 10 days more than I bargained for – Have just heard from Tom who is well –

There is mail twice a week from this to Victoria and one daily from Victoria to all parts of eastern Canada by the Northern Pacific Rwy so you can write any day you like – and as I am very busy I shall only say love to all.

                           Yours ever

                                M. Smith
