My dear Nannie,
I received your letter of the 31st July – with postscript Aug. 2nd just after I had posted my last letter and was on the point of starting up the country – I am glad you have been enjoying yourself and are all well. You gave me the cheque for $100 before I started – or I must have received it in Toronto – anyway it is all right – Sir Chas, Lady Tupper, Schreiber, & others are here and I am going over the line with them tomorrow – we go on board the steamer tonight it is specially chartered for the trip. we shall be away a week or ten days – weather has been very changeable still I hope to get through the fieldwork by the end of next month – long enough to be out as the rainy season begins in October I have no had hardships this year not even mosquitoes – only had my mosquito crib up one night – next night and now it is quite cold at nights – but people here predict a fine Autumn.
None of you mention Clarisse she must write to Papa herself, but I suppose Tom and Arthur quite spoiled her. Love & Kisses for all –
Yours ever
M Smith
