CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY
OFFICE OF THE ENGINEER-IN-CHIEF
Feb 1st(4pm) 1875
My dear Wife
I sent a letter to you by Mr. Hazelwood on Saturday evening- which I hope was delivered to you yesterday- and that you have made up your mind whether you will come up to the opening of Parliament and make shake hands with the Governor General at the drawing room in the evening- I understand Lady Dufferin will not be there- as she is in the habit of getting in the way which so often prevents you from going anywhere with me- It will only be an affair of five minutes- and your dress need not be very gay- though in full evening style- you would have to come up on Thursday morning- and whether you went to the drawing room or not I think you would have to come up – on Thursday evening at latest as you could not have the photographs taken and make all the necessary calls in one day-
Mr. Brophy wants you to sleep at her house and- a bed will be made up for two of the children at my lodgings not even 150 yards off-
You will have to call as follows-

  1. Mr. Fleming
  2. Mrs. H. Canby
  3. Mr. J. Canby
  4. Mrs. Dewdney MP’s wife from B. Columbia
  5. Mrs. Taylor from the (East India) &.c
What has become of Mr.Grant they have been telegraphing for him all over the country one of the spans piers of the restijenche bridge has fallen and is a total wreck- Hazelwood is not returned yet- my vouchers left B.C. on the 26th they will be here in a week after which I can get what more I want and I want you to enjoy yourself for once
    Yours ever
    M. Smith
