CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY

OFFICE OF THE ENGINEER-IN-CHIEF

Prince Arthur’s Landing Aug. 11th, 1878

My dear Wife

The mail steamer passed up without calling here and just came down late this evening, so I had no time to write by her, and I am off westward at 6 o’clock tomorrow morning- tell Smellie this and that he had better get an inspector of masonry appointed for the Engine house at Selkirk and any there should be some one to look after Whitehead’s work but I shall be at Rat portage in about eight days- and will write from there-

Lewry told me at Guelph that he could have the large stonehouse that your Mamma used to own and live in for $400 a year and suggested if anything occurred in the fall to cause me to go away that you might go to Guelph and take the house between you-

I have a sort of presentiment that before the year is over I may have to go to England- either for the Govt.- or on leave of absence- or on my own business- I have written to several- among others the Sec. of the Institution of C.E. to let me know what is going on-for only there is a change of Govt. or Mr.Fleming changes his mind  I forsee almost a stoppage to the Pacific RW and nothing for me to do. We shall see-

Love and kisses to all.

Yours ever

M. Smith
