2015 Field Guide to the Cinderella Stamps of Canada

What is a Cinderella stamp?

The simple definition is that it is a stamp that is not a postage stamp. While postage stamps get all the attention of diehard philatelists and are intimately described in the Scott or Unitrade catalogues, Cinderellas are the neglected step-daughters of philately, not well known, under-appreciated, and well just ignored.  And yet what gems can be found if we make the effort to search!  This little Guide is a first attempt to describe in a systematic manner the more common or interesting Cinderella stamps of Canada.

Dick Dunn, Dan Freeland, Harold Kroll

Bonds are issued by Governments to finance signifigant events in the country's economic life. War bonds are a prime example. They are also examples of the security printer's art and are links to signifigant events in a country's history. Barefoot British Commonwealth Revenues

2012 Edition

Revenue stamps are stamps used to collect taxes and fees. They are issued by Governments, national and local, and by official bodies of various kinds. They take many forms and may be gummed and ungummed, peforated or imperforate, printed or embossed, and of any size. In many countries, they are as detailed in their design as banknotes and they are often made from the same type of paper. The high value of many revenue stamps means that they may contain security devices to prevent counterfeiting.

Catalogue of Western Canadian Ship Way Letter Cancellations

Author: William Topping
2010

The transporting of mail along the British Columbia coast began in 1827 with the arrival of the HBC ship Cadboro and continued until the late 1950's, when seaplanes and trucks took over carrying mail. By 1889, a rivalry developed between the Canadian Pacific Navigation Co. and Union Steamship Co. and mail became franked with ship's hand stamp, allowing us today to indicate a possible route of transport. This catalogue lists the ships and indicates the rarity of each. Signed by the author.

Canadian Colonial Tokens

Ninth Edition
Author: W.K. Cross

The eighth edition of the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Colonial Tokens is now available from coin dealers, bookstores or the Charlton Press. Token issues which entered circulation in Canada up to Confederation in 1867 will be found in this catalogue.

Several newly discovered pieces have been listed in the eighth edition, including a rare bouquet sou mule and new varieties of blacksmith tokens. Many images have been added to assist in identification, and some of the descriptions have been revised. An image of the elusive NB-5, the St. John’s N.B. piece, is shown for the first time. The listing of Devins & Bolton counterstamped pieces has been enlarged, and catalogue numbers assigned. Likewise, the Anchor Money listings have been reworked and catalogue numbers supplied, with several new photographs. Merchant and transportation tokens and patterns at the back of the book have been given catalogue numbers. The Hunterstown piece is now priced, together with a number of other extremely rare tokens which formerly lacked specific valuations.

Canadian Government Paper Money

27th Edition, 2015
Author: Charlton Press
Editor: R. J. Graham

A major innovation which will make this edition particularly memorable is the introduction of colour images. Wherever possible, notes are now shown in their actual colours.

The wild swings in pricing which characterized editions released over the past few years appear to be over. There are many increases and many decreases, but the changes represent fine-tuning more than radical shifts in either direction. The pricing panel generally sense a market that seems to have returned to something closer to stability. The market remains soft but there are hopeful signs that the bottom has finally been reached. Notes are selling, but may remain in inventory much longer than in the heady days prior to the late recession.

Charlton Canadian Bank Notes

8th Edition
Author: Charlton Press
Editor: Robert Graham

Surprisingly, in contrast to the lacklustre performances of many other collectibles in the present difficult market, prices of many Canadian chartered bank notes have moved ahead, and quite decisively too. It is not at all difficult to find notes which have doubled in value since the previous edition was released almost three years ago, and some have tripled, quadrupled and more. Only a few notes show even a modest decline in value, and these tend to be common and lower grade notes which have a tendency to accumulate in dealer stocks in depressed times.

Not long ago, valuations reaching five figures were exceptional. With this edition, they have become quite numerous. The top valued note is the Bank of Vancouver $5 “number 1” note which recently sold for about $175,000. A second note, the 1903 Bank of Montreal double-size $50, is poised to threaten the six-figure barrier if and when it is offered for sale.
