k.d. lang is one of five Canadian country music artists featured in a new series of permanent postage, domestic rate stamps issued by Canada Post on 31 July 2014. The stamps are available in a colourful multi-artist souvenir sheet, on postcards, or in self-adhesive booklets of 10 stamps of each performer.

Photographed by Jeri Heiden, and designed by Roy White of Subplot Design Inc., the k.d. lang stamp features a left-looking side view of lang, her hair tousled and the collar of her denim jacket upturned. Lang's stamp features a black and white photo design, with her lower case name lettered in purple, in contrast to the more colourful accompanying stamp issues for Tommy Hunter, Renee Martel, Hank Snow, and Shania Twain.

Printed by Lowe-Martin in quantities of 250,000 souvenir sheets, and 300,000 booklets of 10, the k.d. lang stamps, and 14,000 First Day Covers cancelled in Consort, Alberta where Kathryn Dawn grew up, will be available from Canada Post retail outlets and the National Philatelic Center.

k.d.lang was born 2 November 1961, and began her musical career in 1983, with her backing band the Reclines, when she burst upon the Canadian music scene as the reincarnation of Patsy Cline. Her persona from this era spawned Stompin Tom Connors' tribute song, including the memorable line, :”She jumps around like a rangy-tang lady k.d.lang.” Her spirited performances in Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom quickly won over the local cow-punk community.

Lang's mezzo soprano voice, and independent persona, eventually won over the Canadian, and U.S. Country and mainstream music industries and earned her world class stardom. k.d. lang's duet “Crying,” with Roy Orbison helped bring her worldwide acclaim in the late 1980s. k.d.'s performance of Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah” at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, brought her back to her old haunts.

k.d. lang has used her celebrity to promote gay rights, Aids awareness, Tibetan Freedom, Vegetarianism and Buddhism. She has previously been recognized with Juno and Grammy awards, Governor General's and Canadian Country Music Awards, the Order of Canada, and induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. This is her first postage stamp. Patsy Cline appeared on a United States postage stamp issued in 1993.
