Happy BC Day Weekend

Back to Newsletter index

BC Day can be the climax of summer with so many activities going on, even though the weather hasn't been specially summery up to now. This year was especially busy, with the North America Out Games during Pride Week leading up to the weekend, with over a thousand athletes competing in 13 sports, plus a ballroom dancing competition and a poker tournament.

Friday afternoon were the medal ceremonies, followed by a street party and Davie Street was closed. That meant the only buses running into the West End were coming down Robson, returning downtown on Georgia, causing total gridlock.

The schedule for the weekend was for day one of the Celebration of Light, the annual fireworks competition on Saturday, which drew a quarter of a million people to the beaches.

At the entrance to BC Place there was a model of how the stagium will look when finished. Each roof support is 50 metres high and weighs 120 tonnes. The green lights in the windows fade to different colours and the small white dots on the support cables are also lights that will be orange for Lions games and blue for Whitecaps games.
Happy BC Day Weekend
About one third of the roof panels are up. There are 2 layers, an exterior one that lays over the curved supports and the flat interior ones. The gaps between the edges will be filled in and the browncolour will bleach out to white in a few weeks.

The lower white ring is called the Garage, and it will be lowered as it is here to expose the retractable part of the roof. Cables will pull the roof material out to cover the open space and will take about 20 minutes. There Are 35 kilometres of cables and the roof will be able to suppot 7 million kilos of snow. There will be 4 HD video screens hanging below the Garage, the biggest measuring 68 by 38 feet.
Happy BC Day Weekend
There are 50 executive suites around the top of the lower tier, all totally renovated and updated. Special panels will cover the upper tier for Whitecaps games. The new seats are wider than the old ones, which have been recycled, so the seating capacity will drop from 60,000 to 54,000. Opening day is Friday, September 30 with the Lions hosting the Edmonton Eskimos and on Sunday, October 2, the Whitecaps will take on the Portland Timbers. Friday, November 25 will see the Collegiate Championship Vanier Cup and Sunday, November 27 will be the Gry Cup Championship.
Happy BC Day Weekend
Back at the Pride Parade, float #125 out of 150 was passing, 2 hours after beginning and the streets were jammed for all 27 blocks of the route.
Happy BC Day Weekend
A busy and entertaining weekend. The weather was perfect and it was the first 3 consecutive days of sunshine in a year. The crowds were well behaved and everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves.

Happy BC Day, everyone.
