Back to Newsletter index

Do you feel a state of calm coming over you? The year of the rabbit is a peaceful one that wo;; be far more tranquil than the previous "Tiger" year, and give us the necessary rest to revive ourselves from a time of uncertainty and stress.

The Year of the Rabbit is the fourth in the cycle of the Chinese New Year, occuring every twelve years. It begins on February 3, 2011 and runs until January 22. 2012. In preparation, Canada Post introduced their new stamp at the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. community centre in Chinatown.

In keeping with Canada Post's second series of Lunar New Year commemorative issues, both a domestic and international stamps were presented, as well as an international rate souvenir sheet.
The challenge of designing a stamp such as this is that the design has to be strong, yet different from previous issues. In this case, the process lasted 18 months. Paul Haslip, partner at HM&E Design
Year of the Rabbit stampdescribed the process. "Finding a unique yet simple way of visualizing the rabbit was the starting point. While the rabbit is not as dramatic as the tiger or snake, it does leap over obstacles. A hopping rabbit was a unique way of visually connecting one stamp to the next in the domestic series. Each stamp has the hind legs of the adjacent rabbit."

The stamps are printed in 6 colours with foil, embossing and varnish for extrta sheen.

All Nations has international rate souvenir sheets available for sale at the store and online.
