Things to do in the Neighbourhood: Southlands Country Fair |
Southlands Riding Club has been providing a home for equestrian sport and recreation in the City of Vancouver since 1943. Located at the heart of the city’s equestrian community, the Club focuses on providing training opportunities for amateur athletes at all levels, from grass roots to Grand Prix. Riding facilities on the Club’s 16 acres include an indoor arena (100x210’), covered arena (100x245’), four outdoor rings for dressage and jumping, a large field, cross-country course, half-mile track, lunge ring/round pen, and event stabling. Southlands Riding Club is a non-profit society that serves approximately 350 riding and non-riding members of all ages and interests. They are also “home” to groups that cater to youth, riders with special needs, and recreational trail riders. The Club encourages volunteer participation to keep their membership dues affordable, and welcomes visitors at our many public events. |

Every September the Club hosts the Southlands Country Fair. It's a community event that focuses on horses and a rural lifestyle within the city of Vancouver. It was created to showcase the unique equestrian neighbourhood of Southlands, and to give all residents of Vancouver the opportunity to enjoy a day in the country, without leaving the city. This year, the Fair will be held on Sunday, September 13 from 10 am to 4 pm. |

| One of the Fair's biggest draws is the Pony Rides. In the past they have had problems with looooong line ups, but they think they have figured out how to avoid that this year, with the introduction of "sign up time slots". When you arrive at the Fair you can go straight to the Pony Rides, put your name down, and you will be given a time to come back for your pony ride. You can then go and enjoy the fair and report back at your given time. A pony ride is 3 tickets = $3.00. | ||

| The Country Fair holds a Bake Sale and a Kids' Baking Contest every year. The Bake Sale is one of the most popular events usually selling out before the day is even half over.
The Kids' Baking Contest is free to enter. It is judged at mid day. Ribbons are awarded to the winners, and then the entries are sold in the Bake Sale. |

| Stables | Partial proceeds from the Fair are used to fund the Southlands Country Fair Summer Riding Program, which enables underprivileged children to take a series of riding lessons with local riding schools and Southlands Riding Club instructors. Other money raised at the Fair is donated to two local charities that run programs for disabled riders: Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities and Southlands Therapeutic Riding Society. The remainder of funds raised are used to support the Southlands Riding Club, a non-profit society established in 1943 as a recreational and training facility for junior and amateur equestrian athletes.
The club is located at 7025 Macdonald Street, one street South of SW Marine Dr. |
