The Chris McGregor collection

Back to Newsletter index

Chris McGregor hails from Vancouver British Columbia where he has lived all his life. In 1948, after a spell in the Navy during World War 2, he graduated with honours from the University of British Columbia with a degree in electrical engineering.

He spent his engineering apprenticeship with a Vancouver consulting engineer, became a partner in that firm in 1952, and practiced as a consulting engineer until his retirement in 1987.

Auction #631, lot #26
Realized $440

Chris started collecting stamps at the age of nine or ten and made his first major purchase around 1936 when he spent the enormous sum of $6.50 on a single cover. It was franked with a 5 öre and a bisected 4 öre stamp from a place called Thorshavn, presumably in Denmark.

A bit of research revealed that there was no place called Thorshavn in Denmark, and that "he had been conned". Fortunately, before he returned the cover, a friend suggested looking for Thorshavn in one of Denmark's colonies. Thorshavn was located, the cover legitimized, and the Faroe Islands have been one of Chris' collecting interest ever since. The cover was dated on January 4, 1919.

Chris also formed a collection of Greenland stamps and postal history, and exhibits built from Chris' collections have won a number of national and international gold medals and grand awards at exhibitions in Europe, the United States and Canada.

Things have changed. Chris is disposing of what's left of his philatelic items to make room for more Vancouver postcards.
