Coin collecting appeals to many people for many reasons. They are similar to stamps in that they tend to tell a story, they are handfuls of history and can be collected by country as well as by topic. There are however several major differences between stamps and coins which can be touched upon:
  • coins often have a high intrinsic value, meaning they are made out of gold or silver or other precious metal. This means that even damaged coins could have value whereas damaged stamps tend to be ill-prized.
  • coins and bank notes are money, whereas a stamp in essence is a receipt for postal services.
  • coins generally require a far greater amount of storage room than most stamp collections.
Coin collecting is called "Numismatics" and a coin collector is known as a "Numismatist". Numismatics nominally includes as well the collecting of paper currency, although there is also another term for this. Coins can be very exciting from a collecting view because coins have essentially existed since pre-Christian times and many from that period can still be obtained for a song. You can collect Roman Emperors as easily as modern mint products (and often more cheaply!), and certainly that is something stamps cannot offer.
Ancient Coins
Coinage has a certain regal air to it, as coins and currency are closely associated with sovereignty and many coins can attach imaginations to the monetary systems of the past like no book can. In the case of bank notes particularly, the area available to the engraver with which to ply his trade is much greater than stamps allowing them to show off sweeping views of cities or landscapes or highly detailed murals of life in the home country. Coinage also allows one to own convenient forms of gold or silver in a transportable form that may serve you in years down the road if economic downturn or mistrust of currency ever occurs.

The colours that well preserved coins can impart are often very pleasing to the eye and are one of the main reasons that coins can excite well beyond the mintage figures. Coins are elegant in their simplicity, and it is the elegant beauty of many coins that collectors find most appealing. Collectors are reminded to never clean coins, however lightly, without first seeking professional advice or assistance.
