1976 Vancouver Dollar

The United Nations hosted the first Conference on Human Settlements, called Habitat, in Vancouver from May 31 to June 11, 1976.

The conference invited delegates from around the world so that they could express their concerns over the extremely serious condition of human settlements, particularly that which prevails in developing countries.

Recognizing that international co-operation, based on the principles of the United Nations Charter, had to be developed and strengthened in order to provide solutions for world problems and to create an international community based on equity, justice and solidarity.

During the period of the meetings, the city issued special "dollar" coins which were accepted by participating merchants in the city.

The coins featured a sprig of flowering doogwood, the Provincial floral emblem, on one side, and the logo of the Conference on the other.
