Ancient Coins Art

If coins are high expressions of Ancient artwork, that reflect the beliefs and values of Greek and Roman societies, then contemporary coin art amplifies historic characteristics we can still learn from today.

A lifleong passion for coins, and history, inspired Vancouver artist John B. Patrick's current series of acrylic artworks depicting historic Roman coins. The giant coins in 8 x 10, or larger, framed formats are as marvellous as the coins that inspired them.

Trajan Victory

Six inches, round, acrylic on wood.

Showing the Emperor Trajan on his horse, slaying a Dacian soldier. Since Trajan, as a general, was commander of the British Garrison, it is interesting to note that the design is strikingly similar to the design for the British Sovereign, showing St George slaying a dragon. Picture.

Athenian Owl

Six inches, round, acrylic on wood.

Depicting a Tetradrachm. Throughout antiquity, Athena and her companion owl served Athens as city symbol and primary coin type. Picture.

Owls exist in a wide range of denominations. The Featured coin, a tetradrachm, is the most common size. Many tetradrachms actually saw little circulation. The denomination represented a lot of money so many coins were minted and stored in bulk for use in large transactions or accounting.
